PFM Crown Prep for Posterior Teeth

Instruments Used:

Straight fissure bur

Long needle bur

Torpedo bur

Finishing bur

1. Depth Orientation Grooves

Depth orientation grooves on the occlusal surface were given with straight fissure bur while following cuspal inclination. Full depth of bur is inserted, so this reduction will be 1.5mm.

All grooves were joined together and occlusal reduction done while preserving and following the anatomy.

2. Orientation grooves on the buccal surface

Straight fissure bur was used to give orientation grooves on the buccal surface. The bur was kept straight along the long axis of the tooth. The principle of two-plane reduction is followed. In the occlusal one third inclined plane followed and in the cervical one third, the bur was used to give 1.5mm equigingival shoulder margins.

3.  Straight wall preparation of the lingual surface

Torpedo bur was used for preparation of lingual surface. Bur was kept straight and chamfer margins were placed 1-1.2 mm above the gingiva.

4. Proximal Preparation

Break the contact point with Long Needle Bur. Carefully start from the side, do not insert the bur in the middle of the proximal surface. Then place Chamfer finish margins here with Torpedo bur.

5. Functional cusp bevel

The buccal cusp was bevelled by 0.5mm keeping the bur at an angle of 45 degree.

This is buccal cusp for lower molar and palatal cusp for upper molar.

6. Finishing

Finish the preparation with yellow coded finishing bur. Do not do this at high speed. Do finishing at low speed. Preserve cuspal anatomy.

Preparation done under guidance of Dr. Agha Suhail Khan at Akhtar Saeed Medical and Dental College
